The History of Needlepoint

It’s time for a history lesson. As you may already know, York Design Company creates classic and preppy needlepoint accessories. While needlepoint may be trendy today, it has been around since 3000 B.C. Embroidery and needlepoint began as a form of decoration to cloth that historically can be found all over the world. Ancient remnants of needlepoint can be found in China, Egypt, Peru, India, Greece and Rome. Needlepoint was once a form of mother-daughter bonding during the Middle Ages until the turn of the 20th Century. The acts of needlepoint and cross-stitching have been passed down through generations and used to be seen as a symbol of family status. Some famous needlepoint stitchers include Mary Queen of Scots, Marie Antoinette, Queen Elizabeth, Mary Martin and Taylor Swift! Today, York Design Company keeps up the historical legacy of needlepoint with our hand-stitched products. You can see other modern examples of needlepoint in shoes, furniture, and artwork in other like-minded designers like Jonathan Adler and Tory Burch.
